My mom's going to take a look at a '03 4-Runner tomorrow. All I know is that it's supposed to be fully loaded and be very well taken care of. This will be her new DD, replacing a Pontiac Montana that's been a great set of wheels for her, but are starting to wear out.
What should she look for (problem areas, known issues) and what should we hope to find (features, options)? Any help is appreciated!

You need to either change your name or that tag, pronto.

Ask on a 4-Runner specific forum. Those guys will know what every nut and bolt on the car does.

Ahhh....missed it by one year. 2002 was the last year the 4Runner looked good - the last year it stuck to its classic shape.
A dozen years later, it now looks like this:

absolutely nothing, my parents have owned one for 10 years (they brought it new) and now it has 185,000 miles on it, nothing has gone wrong yet. theyre nice trucks, plenty of torque and i think they look pretty good.. not as good as the model before it, but pretty good

TPS was always an issue. It's usually the sensor in the spare. Especially when it starts getting colder out. Beyond that, nothing. They are tanks!

I have an '04 SE 4Runner v8. The only 'issues' I've come across are the notorious dashboard hairline cracking, and the center LCD dimmer bulb going out. Other than that, it's been pretty solid for 150k miles. Going to be looking for something more Jalop-worthy after graduating (few weeks).

LOL
I'm most definitely not changing either of them.

Thanks, but I don't want to get bored to death by random part numbers and engine codes and other minutiae that won't affect normal on-road driving.

Well, you might get some less helpful answers, but if you ask a clear question you ought to get a list of known issues too.

Good to know. It's winter time, so I'll be sure to mention this to my Mom.

Yup, no problem. So long as the previous owner did the routine maintenance, it should be pretty stout.

Make sure the Timing belt has been done if it is the V6 and has over 100k miles. Just like the Taco's they are pretty solid. My sister had an 03 Taco 4x4 TRD fully loaded with all the fancy bells and whistles and nothing really went wrong in the 164,000 miles she drove it before selling it. As long as routine maintenance was done you are good to go. Just try to get the service history of the truck. Plan on doing a full major service once you get it and change out all the fluids - tranny, diff(s), brake, coolant and oil - and you should be set to put another 150,000 miles on it.
